project 52 of 2013 | emotional connection

I can't believe it's here - my very last submission for my 2013 Project 52. Though I was late at times, like this week, I didn't miss any and I consider that a serious accomplishment. I should probably share some mind blowingly amazing image from the holidays, but instead I'm going to share one I took with my iPhone. Why? Because I gave my Mark off on Christmas so I could truly be a part of the day; but also, this is one of my favorite photos from 2013. It's my 3 year old daughter with her great-grandmother. Not many people are fortunate enough to be able to have the relationship they do, and it's something worth sharing.

project 52 of 2013 | festive

On Wednesday night we made our annual trek into Washington, DC to visit the National Zoo for Zoo Lights. This is one of my favorite parts about living here and we look forward to it every year. The carousel runs until 8pm, they have a train decorated with lights that takes you around the zoo, and a huge slide you tube down. The indoor exhibits are all open (tho not decorated) and the petting zoo animals are out. Everything dangerous is locked away ;) I grabbed my Rebel but didn't take many pictures - I was wearing our 6 month old in the Ergo and it was cold! I wanted to share a few for our "festive" theme this week.

project 52 of 2013 | abstract

A little abstract fun in the snow with my macro again! At least, I think. Some of it's definitely abstract...some of it might be a stretch.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland | Northern Virginia Photographer

Here in Leesburg, Va, we just got pounded with 4 inches of snow followed by freezing rain. The rumor is we're supposed to get another 5-6 inches of snow tomorrow, so I'm hoping I'll be able to practice shooting snowflakes. In the meantime, I couldn't resist sharing a look at my backyard thru my macro with you!

[session preview] catching up: engagements, anniversaries, families, and headshots | northern virginia photographer

WOW I am behind on blogging. I had so many sessions over the last month that I only just made my turn-around time. So this is going to be a catch-up post on what I've been up to with my favorites and then links to the full preview on FaceBook. I know this is the lazy way out but I think it's better than bombarding you with individual posts of them all at once!

project 52 of 2013 | dreams

Our challenge this week was "dreams." My daughter has been really into Panda Bear Panda Bear lately - she also caught a nasty cold just before Thanksgiving. So in between cuddles and blowing her nose, we're reading this book. A lot. She can actually read it to me now, by memory of course but not bad for a 3 year old.

project 52 of 2013 | thankful

I am so very thankful. Thankful that I have been so busy editing professional sessions, I haven't had time to edit personal ones. Thankful for my two amazing little girls who keep me equally as busy but never give me a hard time when I ask them to sit still for a cute picture. Thankful for my husband who supports me endlessly and without reservation. Thankful for coffee. Thankful for Thanksgiving on Thursday and the family that will be joining us. Thankful for...well, I am just so very thankful.

project 52 of 2013 | fire

Our challenge this week was fire, so I grabbed my little Rebel and brought it to hibachi last night.

Sunday, November 10, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | texture

For our challenge this week, I brought my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro to Wegmans for some up-close-and-personal shots of fruits and veggies. My apologies to everyone I prevented from easily accessing the produce.

[session preview] Santa Baby | Long Island Photographer

I am excited to be doing more sessions on Long Island when I visit home. This amazing family contacted me and I was looking forward to meeting them. Without going into too many details, this session was truly important to them and I was so grateful for the opportunity to capture these images.

[session preview] The D Family | Leesburg VA Family Photographer

I first photographed this awesome family months ago when Baby B was born. She was the third lifestyle newborn session I'd ever had and I was totally in love. Not only are the kids adorable but mom and dad are a lot of fun, so I was thrilled when they asked me to do their family session.

project 52 of 2013 | night time / low light

It's 7:03pm and I definitely just realized today is Sunday. I'm going to blame Daylight Savings Time. Anyway...I had planned to share our Halloween images separately but I thought this was perfect for our  night time/low light challenge this week. It's one of my favorites of my daughter Cinderella and her friend Tinkerbell trick-or-treating.

project 52 of 2013 | spooky

Halloween is Thursday and there are so many great opportunities for our "spooky" challenge this week. I'm sorry this post is late - but since we were planning to be on Long Island over the weekend I decided to wait and photograph the spookiest thing I can think of. And I didn't even need it to be Halloween.

[session preview] Welcome, Baby C | Leesburg VA Lifestyle In-home Newborn Photographer

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to do a newborn shoot by this super fun family. First of all, Big Brother is just the most adorable thing - look at those eyes! This little girl is going to be gorgeous.

project 52 of 2013 | windy

It's officially Fall here in Loudoun County, and today we had delightfully windy weather for our challenge this week - hello, Pumpkin Spice Lattes!

project 52 of 2013 | old

Our challenge this week was "old." Growing up, my grandma told me she gave both of her daughters a copy of this book when they got married and would do the same for me; sadly, she passed before that could happen, but I inherited hers which is even more meaningful. Hanging from it is her cross that she gave to me as a young girl. They're sitting on top of my grandpa's book, Basic War Photography. I always loved the contrast between them.

project 52 of 2013 | soft focus

Our challenge this week was "soft focus." Admittedly, even by the best photographers this is probably my least favorite style because it sort of looks like a mistake made on purpose, but I guess that's the beauty of photography. I achieved the look using a filter in PhotoShop called Make Dreamy by Everyday Elements, though I've read that you can buy actual lenses to do this.

[session preview] K Family Reunion | Leesburg VA Family Photographer

It's such a compliment when your clients not only refer new clients to you, but also treat family and friends to sessions with you! And that's exactly what happened on Monday. Past clients of mine had family in town for the week and wanted to do a session for them. And they were so easy to shoot - these kids are naturals in front of a camera.

Sunday, September 29, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | time

I was pretty excited for our "time" challenge this week and the chance to have a little fun with the seconds hand using a slow shutter speed and layers in PhotoShop...

project 52 of 2013 | from below

Today we found ourselves enjoying a beautiful Sunday at one of our favorite places - Village Winery in Waterford, Va. The warm and sunny day quickly turned to ominous clouds and a nip in the air...which makes for very interesting skies if your photo challenge for the week is "from below."

Three Months | Leesburg VA Family Photographer

My baby girl is three months today! Every month we are doing a little mini session to document how much she's grown - but it documents how I'm growing as well. I only had a point and shoot when my first daughter was born, and then I got the Rebel when she was about a month but had no idea how to use it! These are my favorites from today and were taken with my 5d2 and 50mm 1.4. Also, I should mention these are all SOCC. Isn't the light in her room amazing?

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

The National Zoo | Northern Virginia Photographer

We had friends in town and decided to head to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. I am always excited for any chance to use my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro! I usually spend lots of time at the Invertebrates house but on this trip I wanted to try something a smidge different.

Sunday, September 15, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | loud

Our challenge this week was "loud." With 9/11 on Tuesday, I thought it was only fitting that I reshare some photos I took of the Freedom Tower in [loud] New York City in May 2012.

[session preview] Long Island Mini Sessions, August 2013

While we were home on Long Island, New York a couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to do mini sessions for two super sweet families.

project 52 of 2013 | silence/peace

I have a 3 year old (yesterday! Happy birthday, Baby!) and a 2 1/2 month old, so silence is not something I'm familiar with as of late; but, my days are filled with moments of peace. I am exclusively nursing our baby, and those times, no matter where we are or what is going on around us, are blissful moments of peace and relative quiet as we connect with each other and disengage the rest of the world.

Barrel Oak Winery

I totally forgot to share a few snap shots of our Labor Day at Barrel Oak Winery. We live in "Wine Country" (Loudoun County, VA) but the area is surrounded by fabulous wineries for hours. On Labor Day we made the trek out to Delaplane with some friends to check Barrel Oak out. According to the Washington Post it is the most family-friendly winery in the country...and it totally lived up to its reputation! Tons of families, pets, and an awesome laid-back vibe with great wine and a sangria shack!

project 52 of 2013 | water

Better late than never! We were visiting family on Long Island for the last week which provided many opportunities for our "water" challenge.

The C Family | Sterling VA lifestyle In-home Newborn Photographer

You might recognize Kate from her blog, Kate With a Camera - if you don't, you really should check it out. She is an incredibly talented photog who keeps tabs on daily life with the three cutest dogs. And, recently, a super cute baby [human] boy, that I was fortunate enough to get to photograph a few days ago.

project 52 of 2013 | jumping/in the air

Our challenge this week was "jumping/in the air" and I struggled to come up with something interesting. I haven't done much with silhouettes and sunsets so I thought that would be worth trying. Luckily my sister-in-law Christina moved to Virginia a couple of weeks ago - so happy I have her here to take goofy pictures with!

Macaroni Kid and KinderCare Literacy Party | Northern Virginia Photographer

I was so excited to photograph a Literacy Party held by our local Macaroni Kid and KinderCare, held at Martial Arts World of Ashburn (Virginia). I haven't done much - ok, any - real event photography so I was thrilled at the chance. I had both of my own girls in tow and a great time was had by all.

project 52 of 2013 | sun/flare

I'll admit, I was unreasonably excited about this week's challenge. I know normally I'm really chatty but let's just go right into my images for this week.

Thursday, August 8, 2013

Sweet Baby O | Leesburg VA Newborn Photographer

I was so excited to be able to offer a friend a newborn session for her 12-days-new son as a belated shower gift. I loved how we were able to start with a few posed shots and then enjoy his beautiful eyes. Check out how alert he is!

Sunday, August 4, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | urban/street photography

Let me start off by saying that I have great admiration for street photography and I always find myself in awe of the candidness in the images - simply put, I love how real it is. Humans of New York is one of my favorites, even though they're not candids, it's every day people sharing just a little piece of themselves with the world.

Miss M Turns TWO!! | Leesburg VA Kids Photographer

I seriously can NOT believe that the fabulous Mila is turning TWO. Just this time last year I was photographing her epic first birthday cake smash! And not long before that, I photographed her modeling pettiskirts for an Etsy shop at just six or seven months old. Where does the time go??

project 52 of 2013 | backlighting

Our challenge this week was backlighting - one of my very favorite ways to photograph portraits...and pretty much everything else :) I just love the softness it creates and the opportunities for some unique sun flares.

Sunday, July 21, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | bokeh

Our challenge this week was "bokeh" - that delightful blur that comes as the result of a shallow depth of field. My aperture was set to f/5.6 for this as I was busy taking my younger daughter's one-month pictures - and just happened to see this opportunity with Izzy - so I added a cute bokeh overlay by Ginny Haupert to give it some flair. Not normally my style but I figured it worked this time because, if I'm being honest, I actually forgot about our challenge.

"A Day in the Life" | Northern Virginia Photographer

Yesterday, I joined several other photogs for my very first "A Day in the Life project" and I was super excited about it. Having a 2 1/2 year old and a 4 week old, it's hard to tell where my nights end and days begin. So, I started my project after my cup of coffee and ended it with my oldest's bedtime.

Sunday, July 14, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | nature

This week's challenge was nature. Such a broad subject that it's hard to zero in on what you want to accomplish. I decided to take my Canon 100mm macro out for a walk with my family one evening and this is what I came up with.

Saturday, July 6, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | red, white, blue

Getting my post up a smidge early this week! This week's theme, fittingly, was "red, white, blue." I had wanted to get a picture of the flag guy in Leesburg, VA - this guy decks himself out in American flags and rides his bike around town planting them everywhere. All year. It's amazing and he is nice as can be. But I couldn't find him!

Sunday, June 30, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | music

Island Tyme Band is a very cool reggae-inspired cover band that has been playing at one of the shopping centers near our house, so I thought a few shots of them would be perfect for this week's theme.

Introducing Miss A :) | Leesburg VA Newborn Photographer

This is the little girl I carried for 40 weeks 5 days! She arrived naturally at 4am with just hours to spare before my scheduled c-section on June 18th, weighing in at 7lbs 15ozs and 20.5 inches long.

project 52 of 2013 | bad habit/vices

First things first - Happy Father's Day to my wonderful husband, my dad, and my father-in-law!

Before getting pregnant, I definitely would have told you my worst habit was drinking coffee and I probably would have taken dozens of pictures of every cup of coffee I'd had this week (which was usually around 4 per day.)

Sunday, June 9, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | SOOC

Our challenge this week was SOOC - straight out of camera. I'm definitely one of those people who has fallen into the trap of "if it's not edited it doesn't count." I couldn't tell you if I enjoyed or really disliked the theme this week for that reason. Anyway, I'm sharing an image of our new daughter's bedroom :)

Sunday, June 2, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | landscape

This week's challenge was "landscape" Unfortunately, my daughter was very sick all week, so I barely picked up my camera (or got out of the house). So I ran out tonight and snapped this at the lake down the road. Don't say I never gave you anything ;)

Saturday, June 1, 2013

Toddlers and Tutus | Northern Virginia Photographer

I had two super fun sessions this past week and figured I'd share some favorites with you. Featuring some of my favorite girls!

Sunday, May 26, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | togetherness

This week's challenge was "togetherness." As the very pregnant mom of a toddler, it may not surprise you to hear that one of my favorite times of the day is bed time...but probably not for the reason you're thinking (ha!)

Sunday, May 19, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | closeup/macro

If you've been reading my blog for even a short time, you probably already know that I'm obsessed with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro. I use it for everything - I loved how it performed on my Rebel, and now that I'm on a full frame camera, I love it even more. It's so versatile and captures a ton of detail!

Sunday, May 12, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | mother

Our challenge this week was, appropriately, "mother." I had a number of ideas all involving my "real" camera and my unwitting husband. But the more I planned these shots for my post, the more I thought how nice it would be to share a few of my favorite real images from this week, showing what being a mother means to me.

Paint and Superheros | Northern Virginia Photographer

I'll explain the superheros part tomorrow, as part of my weekly photo challenge.

Today, my friend Beryl and I took our daughters to a Mommy & Me art class at the new Art Station in Leesburg, VA. They had a blast! Unhindered and full of creative expressiveness that only two-year-olds know, our girls took their mouse paintings to a new level.

The "G" Three | Northern Virginia Photographer

One of the moms from our Friday playgroup asked me to do a session for her toddler son and twin 4-month-old daughters, and how could I resist?? Check out those baby blues!!

The M Family's 10th Anniversary | Northern Virginia Photographer

Yesterday I shared two images from a very special session last week for my weekly photo challenge. I'm so excited to be able to share some more with you today!

A few weeks ago I got an email from a fellow photog I did a session for last year (check out her blog here). Her 10th wedding anniversary was coming up and she had this incredible idea - to put back on her original gown, rent a tux for her husband, put her gorgeous daughter in a flower girl dress and her adorable son in a suit...and take some wedding photos!

Sunday, May 5, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | silhouette

Oh, how I love silhouettes.

For this week's challenge I chose images from a super fun, 10th anniversary session where the bride put on her wedding dress (she looks just as amazing now as she did 10 years ago!), the groom was in a tux, and the kids were all dressed up as flower girl and ring bearer. What a fantastic and creative idea to commemorate such a milestone anniversary.

Thomas and Friends

Last Friday, Husband and I took our daughter to see Thomas and Friends in Baltimore. From an adult POV it felt like a giant line ride, but from a kid's POV it was pure awesomeness. My daughter's favorite part was going for a ride on Thomas.

project 52 of 2013 | no faces

This week's challenge was "no faces." Being that it's spring in Northern Virginia, the first thing I thought of was to share photos of the cherry blossoms in our yard, but it's been really windy here. Then I took this of me shaking paws with our German Shepherd, Snoopy; I liked the imagery of the bond between man and beast. Working with rescues again has reminded me of the appreciation our dogs have for us. Even though they sometimes drive us completely nuts, and are not without their quirks, we're their family and they're ours.

Flowers and Birds | Northern Virginia Photographer

Figured I'd update everyone on how our little butterfly garden is doing. Happy to report that it seems there is life to it! The milkweed still hasn't come up, but the woodland sunflowers are off to a great start. This is one of the three we planted; they all pretty much look the same.

Skyline Silhouette | Northern Virginia Photographer

Come to think of it...this probably would have been a good choice for my "from above" theme this week, too! This is a test shot I took setting up to photograph the Northern Lights, which were supposed to be visible from my part of Virginia last night. They never came (didn't get far enough south) but it wasn't all for nothing. I spent a few hours enjoying Starbucks and conversation and jokes with a good friend (check out Beryl's blog) and it appears I caught a shooting star!

project 52 of 2013 | from above

For this week's challenge of "from above" I went with an image from my trip to Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) yesterday. You might remember that I'm working with them to update the photos of their wonderful adoptable dogs on the website. Thanks to Billy and Marla and a few other volunteers I ambushed while they were innocently out walking them, I was able to photograph 37 more dogs this weekend! This is Carma:

Operation: Monarch Butterfly Waystation

This weekend, my husband worked hard (I supervised!) putting in our Monarch Butterfly waystation. The Loudoun Conservancy recently launched the Monarch Butterfly Campaign and we're excited to be a part of it. We had a rose bush already in place, so we purchased two butterfly milkweed plants and three woodland sunflower plants from Hill House Farm & Nursery at the Rust Nature Sanctuary plant sale, and also a butterfly bush from Abernethy and Spencer Greenhouse in Purcelville where we also got our leaf mulch. These are all native plants to our area and all are grown pesticide-free - hoping this means it will be difficult to kill them, because we're not known for our green thumbs in this house.

The C Family Easter Announcement | Northern Virginia Photographer

I recently had the pleasure of photographing the C family's big Easter-themed announcement - Baby #2 is due in October! Congratulations to this beautiful family!!

Welcome, Baby Brooke | Northern Virginia Photographer

I am seriously behind on blogging these days. This session is actually from several weeks ago - I was (and still am) offering a special promotion to build my portfolio in newborn photography, and thankfully Brooke's parents took advantage because she was sweet as can be!

Sunday, April 7, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | reflection

Sorry this is coming so late - I completely lost track of time!

For this week's "reflection" challenge I chose a picture from a beautiful wedding my husband and I attended on Friday night. I tried to capture this image first by focusing on the flowers with their reflection in the background; then I tried to focus on the reflection and blur the flowers in the foreground. The latter looked great in my head but not so great in execution, so I went with my first idea. I had also really wanted to make the image black and white, but I felt that it lost a lot of detail that way. Basically, you are all getting a sub-par image this week ;)

Sunday, March 31, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | color

Before you all get sick of the belly pictures...I'm sneaking in another! For this week's "color" challenge I chose shades of pink.

Sunday, March 24, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | happy

"Happy" is...

  • A thriving 2 1/2 year old, who just happened to be born almost 7 weeks early.
  • A husband who loves me unconditionally and truly supports me in everything I do.
  • The sound of the shutter on my Canon 5D Mark II.

Friends of Homeless Animals [adoptables.]

Some may already know, but before we brought our daughter into the world my husband and I used to bring dogs into our home...a lot of them. In about two years we fostered 15 dogs, and thankfully only kept one - our wonderful Snoopy. Even though we won't foster again until our daughter is older, I still want to continue volunteering, and what better way than to take pictures of the incredible dogs available for adoption?

project 52 of 2013 | green

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!

A few days ago, I shared pictures with you from our trip to Pennsylvania last weekend. If you missed it, you can check it out here. I mentioned that we stopped in Gettysburg on our way home and shared a handful of pictures of my favorite monument with you - the Irish Brigade.

Big Pennsylvania Weekend

Last weekend my husband, daughter, and I took a trip to Hershey, PA to meet my in-laws and sister-in-law for a fun chocolate-filled weekend. If you want to see an image larger, just click on it - since there's so many, I wanted to keep them relatively small.

Sunday, March 10, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | monochromatic

This week's challenge was "monochromatic." I had a super squishy newborn session on Tuesday and I decided to share an otherwise unseen picture with you all :)

Sunday, March 3, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | framing

This week's theme was framing. I hit a bit of inspiration-block and happened to come across my cat being ridiculous at just the right time. This is Molly, being framed by our kitchen sink :)

Grace's 1/2 Birthday Session | Northern Virginia Photographer

Last weekend, while we were visiting friends in Syracuse, I was fortunate enough to do a 1/2 birthday portrait session complete with cake smash for their daughter, Grace.

Sunday, February 24, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | wide angle

Our challenge this week was "wide angle." Unfortunately, I was slammed with commitments all week and then we left to visit friends in Syracuse on Friday morning (in fact, as you are reading this, we're still there). So, I set this to post with an old favorite from our trip to Ft Lauderdale, FL, in July 2012 that I reprocessed :)

Welcome Baby Tony | Northern Virginia Photographer

I spent my Valentine's Day morning loving on the most squishy baby in the world - 3 weeks new Baby Tony. I did proud big brother Sal's birthday shoot several months ago, and before Christmas he and the family diva Bella joined in on the Christmas mini sessions I was offering. So it was an especially nice feeling to have this lovely family ask me to do Tony's newborn pictures :)

project 52 of 2013 | love

This week's theme, naturally, was "love."

And naturally, this was easier said than done. I had a number of pictures to choose from - the usual loving picture of my daughter with her dogs; with her "lovie," a stuffed bear we named Schwartz; cuddling with her dad before bed. I also had a newborn session on Valentine's Day and could probably have chosen one from that to share with you.

Sunday, February 10, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | grain

This week's challenge was grain. At first it occurred to me go for the low-light look, but I wasn't happy with how any of the images came out (probably from all the noise.) So I decided to break into my husband's super secret cooking stuff and broke out the Quinoa.

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | animals

Not to rag on Apple, but our hard drive crashed last week and needed to be replaced. This is the second time in four years. I'm pretty sure that's not normal. As great as their customer service is, "sometimes it just happens" is really not an acceptable answer when we're talking a $200+ repair on a $3000+ computer every two years. But I digress.

National Museum of Natural History

Yesterday, my husband, sister-in-law, daughter, and I took a trip in to Washington DC to go to the National Museum of Natural History. I brought my new Mark II with my 50mm 1.4 on it and my Rebel with my Tamron 17-50 2.8. Yes, I walked around with two cameras, plus my huge bag with my 100mm macro in it. No, I was not embarrassed. Yes, my husband was :)

project 52 of 2013 | low light

Let's talk about irony: last week's challenge was "cold" and it was warm here...and this week's is
"low light" but we got snow! Which, as you might imagine, bounces quite a bit of light. I wondered out loud why Mother Nature didn't want me to succeed in this weekly photo challenge.

Sunday, January 20, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | cold

This week's challenge is "cold." I was expecting snow here on Thursday, but it came and went without even a flake (and it's in the 50s this weekend). So my next thought was to try and freeze fruit in an ice cube...but did you know the ice turns cloudy if it's not distilled water?? Science experiment fail. So then in a final act of desperation, I spritzed a flower with water and put it in the ice tray, hoping to get little crystals on the petals, but it just looked wet. Please see exhibit A.

Nesting.

Every woman is affected by pregnancy differently. Some are more emotional than before, some are hungry all the time... for me, I nest. With my daughter I insisted we paint the entire interior of the house. This time, I am insisting we organize. A place for everything and everything in its place. Even my daughter is doing her part by ensuring shoes are lined up neatly by the front door - without being asked.

Sunday, January 13, 2013

project 52 of 2013 | DOF

This week's challenge was "depth of field." I was wanting to do something a little artsy but sometimes fate just hands you the perfect opportunity - pun intended.

Two-Weeks New Mr. T | Northern Virginia Photographer

Last weekend I was invited to take pictures of the beautiful, two-weeks-new Mr. T - you might remember him from my Project 52 last Sunday. Mom and Dad asked that their faces not appear online, so I'm only sharing a few of their little man. See the rest of his debut on Facebook to keep my blog loading at an appropriate speed ;)

project 52 of 2013 | new
