A little abstract fun in the snow with my macro again! At least, I think. Some of it's definitely abstract...some of it might be a stretch.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland | Northern Virginia Photographer
Here in Leesburg, Va, we just got pounded with 4 inches of snow followed by freezing rain. The rumor is we're supposed to get another 5-6 inches of snow tomorrow, so I'm hoping I'll be able to practice shooting snowflakes. In the meantime, I couldn't resist sharing a look at my backyard thru my macro with you!

project 52 of 2013 | time
I was pretty excited for our "time" challenge this week and the chance to have a little fun with the seconds hand using a slow shutter speed and layers in PhotoShop...

The National Zoo | Northern Virginia Photographer
We had friends in town and decided to head to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. I am always excited for any chance to use my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro! I usually spend lots of time at the Invertebrates house but on this trip I wanted to try something a smidge different.

project 52 of 2013 | nature
This week's challenge was nature. Such a broad subject that it's hard to zero in on what you want to accomplish. I decided to take my Canon 100mm macro out for a walk with my family one evening and this is what I came up with.

Introducing Miss A :) | Leesburg VA Newborn Photographer
This is the little girl I carried for 40 weeks 5 days! She arrived naturally at 4am with just hours to spare before my scheduled c-section on June 18th, weighing in at 7lbs 15ozs and 20.5 inches long.

Flowers and Birds | Northern Virginia Photographer
Figured I'd update everyone on how our little butterfly garden is doing. Happy to report that it seems there is life to it! The milkweed still hasn't come up, but the woodland sunflowers are off to a great start. This is one of the three we planted; they all pretty much look the same.

National Museum of Natural History
Yesterday, my husband, sister-in-law, daughter, and I took a trip in to Washington DC to go to the National Museum of Natural History. I brought my new Mark II with my 50mm 1.4 on it and my Rebel with my Tamron 17-50 2.8. Yes, I walked around with two cameras, plus my huge bag with my 100mm macro in it. No, I was not embarrassed. Yes, my husband was :)

project 52 of 2013 | low light
Let's talk about irony: last week's challenge was "cold" and it was warm here...and this week's is
"low light" but we got snow! Which, as you might imagine, bounces quite a bit of light. I wondered out loud why Mother Nature didn't want me to succeed in this weekly photo challenge.

project 52 of 2013 | cold
This week's challenge is "cold." I was expecting snow here on Thursday, but it came and went without even a flake (and it's in the 50s this weekend). So my next thought was to try and freeze fruit in an ice cube...but did you know the ice turns cloudy if it's not distilled water?? Science experiment fail. So then in a final act of desperation, I spritzed a flower with water and put it in the ice tray, hoping to get little crystals on the petals, but it just looked wet. Please see exhibit A.

Hashtag Patchogue
Though I currently live in Northern Virginia, both my husband and I are from Long Island, NY. My family lives in a small town on the south shore called Patchogue, and when we go home to visit, this is where we stay.
The Happiest Boy on Earth
I'd like to introduce you to Liam. Seriously, this kid doesn't stop smiling. His super proud parents are friends from college and asked me to do a session with them while I was home this past weekend. Of course, I jumped at the chance - who wouldn't want to spend some time with Liam?? I also used my new Canon 100mm macro exclusively for this shoot. Nice to have very patient friends who will let you play :)

Mila - Sneak Preview
Tonight I had the ultimate pleasure of photographing Mila for her big FIRST birthday (which is tomorrow! or, I guess technically today. Happy birthday, Mila!) I'm not even 1/4 of the way editing but I wanted to share a sneak preview of the beautiful birthday girl :)
We did her session at Morven Park in Leesburg, VA. I don't want to ruin the surprise but we ended with the most epic cake smash ever ;) More on that when I'm done editing and ready to share the rest of my favorites!
In the meantime, is Instagram cropping up (pun intended) in anyone else's photography, outside of the app? I am unapologetically obsessed with square cropping, thanks to IG. And I must say, quite impressed with the performance of my Tamron 17-50 on this image.
